ZCode coding workspace: open source and plan limits

By AiCoN | 6 October 2026 | 5 min read

ZCode is Z.ai's coding workspace with desktop, browser and terminal interfaces. Its repository is Apache-2.0 licensed, but model usage and the GLM Coding Plan are separate. Review code changes and account limits instead of treating open source as unlimited free inference.

What is ZCode?

The official repository describes an AI coding workspace and includes clients, backend services, a shared interface and coding-agent code. The product page calls it the official harness for GLM-5.3. A coding harness is software that helps a model work with a project; it is not itself a guarantee that generated code is safe or correct.

Who should use it?

Developers who understand their codebase can use it to explore a change, draft tests or compare implementation approaches. It is not a general app recommendation for someone who does not code. For a student or small team in India, begin with a non-sensitive sample repository and a reversible change rather than production credentials or a live deployment.

Open source and hosted model costs differ

The repository lists Apache License 2.0 for ZCode. That permits use under the licence terms, but does not remove the costs of hosted models, cloud infrastructure or a coding subscription. Check the provider and account used by your chosen setup before assuming an open-source client has free AI usage.

GLM Coding Plan has usage windows

The product page displays Lite at a discounted US$12.60/month against US$18, while plan documentation describes both five-hour and weekly limits. The checked overview lists Lite at 2,000 five-hour credits and 10,000 weekly credits. Do not describe that as unlimited tokens or a guarantee that every model endpoint is covered.

Price and promotion caution

At a rough ~₹96.43/USD estimate, the displayed US$12.60 is about ~₹1,215 and US$18 is about ~₹1,736. The discount may change and checkout can have different taxes or renewal terms. Confirm which models, tools and billing cycle your account includes. The ZCode app page does not independently establish a complete app-price schedule.

Review edits, commands and secrets

AI coding can introduce security problems, unwanted dependencies or destructive commands. Use version control, inspect diffs and run tests before merging. Keep credentials out of prompts and public code. A server exposed beyond your machine needs the authentication and deployment protections in the current documentation; do not run a sample configuration as a production service.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Open zcode.z.ai or the linked official repository and decide whether to use a packaged app or a source development setup.
  2. Read the current README and licence. For a source build, follow its specified Git, Node and package-manager versions rather than an old installation snippet.
  3. Create a version-controlled sample project without secrets and save the starting state.
  4. Configure the supported model account through the documented route. Review coding-plan coverage, credit windows and renewal before paying.
  5. Ask for one small change with clear acceptance criteria. Review files and proposed commands before applying risky actions.
  6. Inspect the diff, run tests and check dependencies and security assumptions.
  7. Merge only after review. Keep any local server private unless you have configured appropriate authentication and deployment safeguards.

Cost, eligibility and limits

Source licenceApache License 2.0 listed for the official ZCode repository. Review licence and notice requirements.
Lite price referenceProduct page shows US$12.60/month discounted from US$18, about ~₹1,215 versus ~₹1,736 at an ~₹96.43/USD estimate. Promotion, billing and taxes need checking.
Usage limitsChecked docs list Lite five-hour and weekly credit caps. A paid plan is not unlimited inference.
Separate costsModel access, hosted services and infrastructure can cost money even when client source is open.
AiCoN check and caveatsOfficial product page, repository/English README and coding-plan overview checked 6 October 2026. Open-source licence distinguished from inference and subscription costs. No installation, code execution, unlimited-token promise or personal model benchmark claimed.

Frequently asked questions

Does Apache-2.0 mean all AI calls are free?

No. The code licence and model-service billing are different.

Is the discounted Lite price permanent?

No permanence was established. Check current checkout and renewal terms.

Can I trust generated code without review?

No. Inspect changes, run tests and keep risky operations reversible.
