TED-Ed: animated lessons, and what TED says about free accounts
TED-Ed is TED's education site with short animated lessons. TED says registering and working on lessons is completely free.
What it is
TED-Ed is TED's education site. Its homepage says "We create and curate the best educational content on the web." TED's About page describes TED-Ed Animations as "short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners everywhere", each made with experts, and a platform where teachers build their own lessons. It is not an AI tool.
Is it free?
Partly confirmed. TED's help page says "Registering for a TED-Ed account and working on TED-Ed lessons is completely free, both for teachers and students." The About page says viewers are welcome to watch lessons, and we saw no price on the pages we read. No page we read states in so many words that every video is free to watch, so we say only what is written.
What you can do there, per TED
- Watch TED-Ed Animations, short videos on topics shown on the homepage by subject.
- Teachers can create lessons around "any TED-Ed Animation, TED talk or YouTube video", per the homepage.
- Students who take a teacher's lesson can answer "Think" questions and post in Discuss forums if they have an account.
- The teacher chooses whether lesson-takers need an account or can use a nickname. Nickname users must finish in one session and cannot join Discuss forums.
Accounts and age
- A TED-Ed account is the same as a TED.com account. Sign-up asks for first and last name, email and country, per TED's help page.
- TED says you must be 13 or over to create an account or save work under a nickname. Younger children can watch lessons, per the same page.
- The help page says sign-up works by email or Facebook, and that Google accounts are not supported. That page may be dated, so check the sign-up screen.
Privacy and data
- We did not read TED's privacy policy, so we make no claim on how data is used. Watching without an account is the lowest-data way to try it. That is our advice.
India
- The pages we read set no region limit. We did not test access from India, and we quote no price.
