What it is
SuperTuxKart is a kart racing game, in the style of games like Mario Kart, with a cartoon look. Its FAQ calls it "a free, open-source, cross-platform kart racing game, with over 5 million downloads and two decades of development history". It lists 21 original tracks, a Story Mode, and local and online multiplayer. Extra modes include Time-Trial, Soccer and Egg Hunt. It is not an AI tool. We included it as a free game.
Is it free?
Yes. The FAQ answers "Is SuperTuxKart really free?" with "Yes! SuperTuxKart is available for free, without any kind of active ads or microtransactions." One catch: it says a gift package with two extra tracks is offered early to donors, and that those tracks will be free for everyone in later releases. The game itself does not need a donation.
Where you can get it
- Official downloads: the FAQ says the team provides official builds for Linux, Windows, Mac, Android and Switch Homebrew. The download page offers files on GitHub and on Itch.io.
- iPhone and iPad: the FAQ says the iOS version on the App Store is "unofficial", although a team blog post titled "SuperTuxKart 1.5 is now available on iOS" exists. Check the App Store listing before you install.
- Needs: the FAQ lists Android 5.0 or later, iOS 13 or later, 1 GB of free RAM and 800 MB of disk space. Older computers may need low graphics settings.
What you can do with it
- Race the computer in Story Mode or single races, with difficulty settings.
- Play with friends: local multiplayer on one device, or online.
- Add content: the FAQ says there are hundreds of community-made add-ons.
What to watch out for
- Online play needs an account. The FAQ says you create an online STK account inside the game, then pick Online, then Global networking. Community-hosted servers are run by other people.
- It is a big update-in-progress project. The home page says the next major release, "SuperTuxKart Evolution", is still under development, and public test builds are not yet available.
- We did not check any age rating for the game.
Privacy and data
- The FAQ says the team believes software "should respect and serve its users", which "disqualifies nearly all forms of advertisement". It says it may name sponsors in the credits or show passive billboards on tracks.
- The privacy policy covers the online STK Add-ons service. It says registering needs an email address and a name, which "does not need to be your real name".
- It says that when the game connects to that service it collects some non-personal information such as your operating system, and that the web server logs your IP address and browser details.
- We did not read the policy's sections on cookies, third-party services and children (COPPA) in full.
India
- We saw no country limit on the download page. We did not test the downloads from India.
