Solar Mini 4: low-cost API, changing launch discounts

By AiCoN | Published 7 October 2026 | Sources checked 7 October 2026

Solar Mini 4 is a compact developer model for repeated AI tasks. Its direct Upstage launch offer has changed since the original post. Check the route you pay through, not a copied promotion date.

What is Solar Mini 4?

OpenRouter describes Upstage's model as a 35-billion-parameter mixture of experts with about three billion parameters active for a response. A mixture of experts activates selected parts of the model rather than all parameters at once. "Mini" does not mean it fits every laptop.

The current OpenRouter page lists a 524,288-token context window and up to 131,072 completion tokens. It supports tool calling and structured output, with emphasis on Korean, English and Japanese. Malayalam accuracy is not established by those language claims. Test it on your own documents and task formats.

Direct Upstage prices now differ from the old post

Upstage's official pricing page gives Standard rates per million tokens of US$0.10 input, US$0.01 cached input and US$0.40 output. At approximately ₹96.43 per dollar, these are about ₹9.64, ₹0.96 and ₹38.57 respectively, before taxes and payment conversion.

The direct promotional schedule checked on 7 October says 70% off until 11 October 2026 at 00:00 UTC, meaning 11 October at 5:30 AM IST. That makes current direct rates US$0.03 input (about ₹2.89), US$0.003 cached input (about ₹0.29) and US$0.12 output (about ₹11.57) per million tokens.

The same schedule lists 50% off from that boundary until 23 October at 00:00 UTC, or 23 October at 5:30 AM IST: US$0.05 input (about ₹4.82), US$0.005 cached input (about ₹0.48) and US$0.20 output (about ₹19.29). The standard rates are the published reference, not a promise that future promotions cannot change. Upstage says prices exclude 10% VAT; check the actual tax treatment shown for your purchase.

OpenRouter is a separate route

OpenRouter currently displays 50%-off rates of US$0.05 input and US$0.20 output per million tokens, plus US$0.005 cache reads. Those are approximately ₹4.82, ₹19.29 and ₹0.48. Do not apply Upstage's direct 70% offer to an OpenRouter request unless that route itself shows it.

Provider availability, routing and billing terms can differ. Check the selected endpoint and the account's price before sending a large job. No free API tier was established from the pages checked. A third-party chat interface advertised as free is not proof that the developer API is free.

How to test before automating

  1. Choose either direct Upstage access or a supported aggregator route. Read its current prices and account terms.
  2. Keep your API key on the server, not in a public website's frontend.
  3. Set a spending limit and test a small batch of real examples. Check both correct and incorrect outcomes.
  4. For repeated classification or extraction, require the output format you need and validate it in code.
  5. Test Malayalam spelling, names and numerals separately. Do not infer local language quality from Korean benchmarks.
  6. Review tool permissions before allowing the model to edit files, send messages or call business systems.
  7. Recheck promotional rates before scaling up or scheduling work after a discount boundary.

Performance and self-hosting cautions

The original post repeated Upstage's benchmark and single-GPU quantisation claim. The official model documentation now rendered only its promotional banner during this check. OpenRouter supplies model specifications and benchmark summaries, but this guide did not verify a downloadable weight licence or run the model locally. Do not turn a hardware claim into an install promise.

For an Indian business, cheap tokens can suit frequent routine requests, but retries, validation, external tools and human review can dominate the total cost. An incorrect decision is not made safe by a lower token bill.

What changed since the original post?

The 1 October post stated 50% off through 22 October. Current direct Upstage pricing adds a 70% phase through 10 October UTC, then the 50% phase. OpenRouter still shows 50%. This guide separates those routes and uses a current sourced INR estimate.
