What it is

Scribus is a page layout program, also called desktop publishing. Its website calls it "the Go-To Libre Desktop Publishing Application". You place text, pictures and shapes on pages to make things like newsletters, brochures, posters, magazines and print-ready PDFs. The About page says it runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and several other systems. It is not an AI tool. It is a more serious tool than a simple design app, and its site does not describe it as a quick one.

Is it free?

Yes, as far as the site says. The home page says: "Scribus is reliable and Free. Free really means Free with an uppercase F. Free is more than just gratis (which is just a side-effect)." We saw no price on the pages we read. The downloads page links to installers on SourceForge and says nothing about paying. The official Quick Tour, rechecked 23 October 2026, identifies the software licence as GPL.

What it says it can do

How to get it

  1. Open the project's downloads page.
  2. The page says the current stable version is 1.6.6 and the development version is 1.7.3. It recommends stable for almost all production work.
  3. Pick the Windows or macOS installer. Links go to SourceForge, which the project's own page points to. The page lists macOS 12 or higher for Intel and macOS 13 or higher for Apple Silicon, and Windows 7 to 11.

The official Scribus 1.6.x Quick Tour describes document setup, frames and properties panels. Its introduction and frame-layout pages were read on 23 October 2026; this is not an installation test.
