What it is
RecipeSage is a recipe keeper, meal planner and shopping list app. Its home page calls it "A free, open source recipe keeper, meal planner, and shopping list manager for Web, Desktop, iOS, and Android". You save recipes from websites, photos, PDFs or documents, plan meals on a calendar, and build shopping lists from them. We included it as a free kitchen organiser.
Is it free?
Yes, per its home page: "A free, open source recipe keeper, meal planner, and shopping list manager". Its GitHub README says the code is under the AGPL-3.0 licence for non-commercial use, and that commercial use needs a separate licence from the developer. That applies to people running it as a business, not to cooking at home. We did not find a price or plan on the pages we read.
What you can do with it
- Save recipes. From a web link, a photo of a cookbook page, a PDF or a document, per the home page.
- Cook Mode. A full-screen view with ingredients and steps side by side, scaling servings, and the screen kept awake.
- Plan and shop. Drag and drop meal planning, and shopping lists grouped by grocery aisle.
- Nutrition and tools. Calorie and macro tracking per serving, plus a pan size converter and a measurement converter.
- Works offline. Your recipes stay searchable without internet and sync across devices, per the home page.
- Export. The home page says you can export your data to PDF, JSON-LD or plain text at any time.
What to watch out for
- AI cooking assistant. The GitHub README lists a built-in AI cooking assistant. The home page does not mention it, and we did not check whether it has limits or costs.
- Account. The home page says recipes sync across devices, which suggests an account. We did not verify the sign-up steps.
- Not tested. We did not install or use it.
Privacy and data
- The home page says "Your data is your own" and that RecipeSage does not hold it hostage because you can export it.
- The app links a legal page, but it needs JavaScript and we could not read it. We did not verify its privacy policy, so check it before saving anything personal.
- The README says you can self-host RecipeSage yourself, which is a more technical route.
India
- The home page lists web, desktop, iOS and Android apps and says the interface is community-translated. We did not find a price or country limits. We did not test it from India.
