What it is
Pinta is a program for drawing and editing pictures on a computer. Its website calls it "a free, open-source program for drawing and image editing" and says it "keeps things simple without sacrificing functionality". It is a desktop program, not an AI tool and not a phone app.
Is it free?
Yes, per Pinta. The home page says "Pinta is a free, open-source program for drawing and image editing". GitHub lists the licence as MIT. We saw no price and no sign-in step on the pages we read.
What the site lists
- Basic tools: select, crop, rotate and resize.
- Advanced tools: clone, recolor and magic wand.
- Effects and adjustments with live previews.
- Unlimited undo.
- "Available on Linux, Mac, Windows, and *BSD".
Good to know, per the project
- The downloads page offers Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), Linux (Flatpak) and Linux (Snap) downloads.
- GitHub lists 3.1.2, published 2 April 2026, as the latest release when we checked.
- The site does not list system requirements in the pages we read, so check the downloads page before installing.
Our advice
- It suits quick jobs such as cropping, resizing, drawing on a screenshot or touching up a photo. The site presents it as simpler than large editors.
- Download it only from pinta-project.com, and use the links on that page.
Privacy and data
- We read no privacy statement for the program and make no claim on what data it collects. Pictures are files on your computer, but we did not check anything beyond that.
India
- No region limit appears on the pages we read. We did not test it from India. There is no price to convert.

Scoped recheck 23 October 2026: 3.1.2 (2 April 2026) is still the latest release; the downloads page now also lists a macOS Apple silicon (arm64) download next to Intel, so that line is updated; the "free, open-source" description and the MIT licence stand. Added the project's own interface screenshot from its home page. Other claims retain their original source-check date. Original publication date unchanged.
