What it is
Open Library is a free online catalogue of books, run by the Internet Archive, a non-profit. Its About page says it is "an initiative of the Internet Archive", and its goal is "a web page for every book ever published". For many books it also links to a copy you can borrow. The FAQ says the Internet Archive and participating libraries selected digitized books that "are available to be borrowed by one patron at a time from anywhere in the world for free". It is not an AI tool. We included it as a free way to find and borrow books online.
Is it free?
Yes, per its FAQ: "Open Library is free and open to anyone." Some features need an account, such as borrowing, lists and notes. We saw no paid plan on the pages we read.
How borrowing works
- Sign up first. The FAQ says to sign up for an account, find a book to borrow, and if a BookReader edition is available you can read it in your browser right away with no special software.
- Loan length and limit. The FAQ says you can borrow ten books at a time. Loans are one hour for browsing and 14 days if the book is fully borrowable. Loans expire automatically.
- One reader at a time. If a book is checked out, you can join a waiting list. You get an email when it is back and then have 24 hours to borrow it, per the FAQ.
- Formats. Books are available in BookReader format and usually in PDF and ePub, per the FAQ. It says you can also listen to any borrowable book with the "listen" button.
What to watch out for
- Not every book can be read. Open Library is a catalogue first. Some books have only a record, and some are borrowable only when nobody else has them checked out.
- Newer books can have waiting lists. That follows from the one-reader-at-a-time rule above.
- We did not make an account or borrow a book. We also did not check which books are available to readers in India.
Privacy and data
- Signing up asks for a username, password and email address. The FAQ says it uses your email to run your account and may send messages you can opt out of.
- The FAQ says your contributions, including lists, notes and your Reading Log, are publicly viewable by default. You can set your Reading Log to private in Privacy Settings.
- You get a digital library card from the Internet Archive when you sign up. The FAQ says you can delete your Internet Archive account, and to also delete your Open Library account you need to contact openlibrary@archive.org.
India
- The FAQ says borrowable books are available "from anywhere in the world". We did not check individual titles from India, and no rupee price is involved.
