NMMSS 2026-27: student applications till 15 November (NSP) and track school verification

By AiCoN | Published 7 October 2026 | Dates re-checked 2 November 2026

The Education Ministry extended the NMMSS application date to 31 October 2026 (1 October notice); the NSP scheme list now shows student applications till 15 November 2026. This is the National Scholarship Portal application deadline, not a new deadline to sit the state selection exam. Fresh awards are for selected Class IX students; existing award holders renew for Classes X to XII, subject to the rules.

Scoped update: 2 November 2026. The NSP scheme card for NMMSS now shows student application till 15 November 2026, institute verification till 30 November 2026 and nodal verification till 15 December 2026. Our 7 October version, based on the Education Ministry PIB notice, said 31 October, 15 November and 30 November. We did not find a newer PIB notice, so the NSP card is the date to follow. Original publication date unchanged.

Submission is only the first stepSchool verification and district verification have separate dates. A saved draft, OTR number or submitted application does not guarantee a scholarship.

The current dates

Student applicationSunday, 15 November 2026 (NSP card, 2 November). PIB notice of 1 October: Saturday, 31 October
Institute verification (L1)Monday, 30 November 2026 (NSP card). PIB notice: 15 November
District verification (L2)Tuesday, 15 December 2026 (NSP card, nodal verification). PIB notice: 30 November

The first dates in the table are from the NSP scheme card checked on 2 November 2026; the PIB notice dates of 1 October 2026 are shown for comparison. Apply early and ask the school to check the application well before its verification date. Do not wait for a weekend deadline to resolve a bank or school record problem.

Who can apply?

NMMSS supports students in state government, government-aided and local body schools. Parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh a year. To appear in the selection test, students need at least 55% marks or equivalent in Class VII, with a five-percentage-point relaxation for SC/ST students.

The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships each year for eligible Class IX students who qualify in their State/UT selection examination. The award continues through Classes X to XII by renewal, subject to academic requirements. Being in a low-income household alone does not replace the selection requirement. For Kerala, confirm your selection or renewal status with your school before starting a fresh application.

What does the award pay?

The published award is ₹12,000 per year, paid to eligible students' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer. This is an annual award, not a promise that ₹1,000 will arrive each month. Approval, verification and the payment process still apply.

How to apply on NSP: step by step

Checked on the live National Scholarship Portal on 19 October 2026. NSP now uses One Time Registration (OTR) - do this first if you have never registered.

  1. Open scholarships.gov.in (Academic Year 2026-27 is live), click Students → Apply now, then Register. Registration is free - no fee is required.
  2. Read the OTR guidelines, tick the consent boxes and click Next. Register your active mobile number and verify it with the OTP; a reference number is sent to your mobile.
  3. Complete eKYC: install the NSP OTR app and the Aadhaar Face RD app on an Android phone and do face authentication with the reference number. Your OTR ID is then generated. Aadhaar is required; a minor without Aadhaar can register with a parent's or legal guardian's Aadhaar.
  4. Log in on NSP with your OTR ID, open the Renewal application for Academic Year 2026-27 and choose the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS). (Fresh applicants choose Fresh Application instead.)
  5. Fill the application form and upload the documents it lists.
  6. Submit before 15 November 2026 (NSP scheme list, checked 2 November 2026). Track the application in the same dashboard; institute and district/state verification happen after you submit.

Video guides

We searched YouTube on 19 October 2026 for a step-by-step application video for this scheme on the current NSP OTR portal in English and in Malayalam. The videos we found cover older portal versions or could not be verified to match the current portal, so we are not linking any rather than risk outdated or unrelated instructions.

Documents, bank details and help

The official NMMSS FAQ says fresh applicants give the school an income certificate and caste certificate for verification; it says documents are not uploaded for this scheme. Confirm current portal instructions and the school's requirements rather than assuming this older FAQ describes every 2026 screen.

The FAQ stresses correct IFSC and account numbers, completed KYC and an active account. Ask the bank about Aadhaar linkage and the account used for DBT if you are unsure. NSP also lists a ₹30, tax-inclusive charge for the complete assisted OTR and application activity at Common Service Centres. That is an assisted-service charge, not the scholarship amount or a reason to pay an unofficial agent.

Frequently asked questions

Can an unselected Class IX student apply just because the date was extended?

The fresh award requires State/UT selection. This extension does not replace that examination.

Do existing students use a fresh application?

Existing award holders use renewal where applicable. Check the current scheme and school guidance.

Is OTR enough?

No. OTR identifies the student; the scholarship application and both verification levels are separate.

What changed since the earlier post?

The 1 October PIB notice gave 31 October for applications, 15 November for institute verification and 30 November for district verification. On 2 November the NSP scheme list showed 15 November, 30 November and 15 December for the same three steps. This guide separates those dates from the state selection exam and explains OTR, school checks and bank risks. It does not claim we tested a student's application.
