National Renewable Energy Fellowship 2026-27: what it pays, and why selection runs through institutes
The National Renewable Energy Fellowship (NREF) is the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's merit-based fellowship for higher studies and research in renewable energy: M.Tech, PhD (JRF to SRF) and post-doctoral research. Monthly support ranges from ₹12,400 for M.Tech to ₹37,000 for JRF and ₹58,000 to ₹67,000 for post-doctoral fellows. Do not treat the NSP listing as a confirmed direct-application route: selection runs through participating institutes that are allotted fellowships. The National Scholarship Portal lists a 2026-27 window closing 30 November 2026, but MNRE's own rules document describes no public application process, and who may submit there is not confirmed. Read this as an explainer of how the scheme works before counting on the portal date.
Scoped update: 2 November 2026. The live NSP scheme list now shows this scheme with student applications till 30 November 2026, defective application and institute verification till 15 December 2026 and nodal verification till 31 December 2026. Our earlier version said 31 October, 15 November and 30 November. Original publication date unchanged.
At a glance
- What: central fellowship for M.Tech, PhD and post-doc research in renewable energy subjects
- Who: students selected by NREF-allotted institutes for renewable-energy courses; the rules require qualifying scores (see the ambiguity note below)
- Amount: M.Tech ₹12,400/month; JRF ₹37,000/month + HRA + ₹20,000/year contingency; PDF/RA ₹58,000-67,000/month
- Scale: the approval document contradicts itself: one sentence says 165 new fellowships every year, while its own table totals 33 new slots a year (165 over five years). It does not say which is operative
- Dates: NSP lists a 2026-27 window closing 30 November 2026; MNRE's rules document states no public application deadline
- Where: listed on scholarships.gov.in under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy; no fee anywhere in the rules
Fellowship amounts (official norms)
- JRF (PhD track): ₹37,000 per month plus HRA as per central government fellowship norms and ₹20,000 per year contingency; 2 years as JRF, then up to 3 years as SRF (5 years maximum).
- PDF / Research Associate: ₹58,000 (level I), ₹61,000 (level II) or ₹67,000 (level III) per month, for 3 years.
- M.Tech: ₹12,400 per month for 20-24 months as per institute norms.
How selection actually works
Checked against MNRE's administrative approval for the scheme (12 August 2026) and the live NSP listing on 25 October 2026. Two things are true at once, so read both:
- The NSP listing shows a live fresh application window for 2026-27: scheme open from 1 June 2026, student applications open till 30 November 2026. However, this NSP card links no scheme guidelines or FAQ document (both links are empty as of 2 November 2026), and MNRE's own rules document does not describe a student application on NSP at all. Whether the portal window is meant for the public or only for candidates already routed by allotted institutes is not stated anywhere official that we could find.
- The ministry's rules describe institute-led selection: NREF slots are allotted to selected institutes, which select the students and forward names to the ministry; the fellowship starts from the candidate's date of joining. The rules' score clause reads, verbatim: "select the students for M.Tech /Ph.D Courses through GATE Score or CSIR Score or CSIR-JRF/AICTE/NET Score qualified for JRF Only", and students without these qualifications are not eligible. The clause does not clearly say which score belongs to which course, so we are not resolving it: treat a strong GATE / CSIR / NET-type qualification as necessary, and confirm the exact requirement with the institute. Fellowships apply to renewable-energy subjects only.
So the practical route is: identify an NREF-allotted institute offering your renewable-energy programme, meet its score-based selection, and treat the NSP listing as a portal formality whose 30 November date is a portal-listed window, not a published scheme deadline. An NSP application by itself does not make anyone a fellow.
What the NSP listing shows
For reference, the portal route is: scholarships.gov.in > One-Time Registration > the National Renewable Energy Fellowship Scheme card under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The card lists student applications open till 30 November 2026, institute verification till 15 December and district/state verification till 31 December. We did not create an account or submit an application, and because the card carries no guidelines or FAQ document, we cannot confirm who the portal window is intended for.
Video guides
We searched YouTube on 25 October 2026 for a walkthrough of this specific fellowship in English and in Malayalam. We found only generic NSP tutorials, not one that matches this scheme, so we are not linking any rather than risk wrong instructions.
Stay safe
- Applying is free. Never pay anyone who promises a fellowship slot or selection.
- Apply only on scholarships.gov.in, the official National Scholarship Portal. Lookalike portals are common.
- The ministry disburses by DBT to the fellow's bank account through the host institute; nobody can "arrange" a slot for a fee.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get it without GATE or NET-type scores? The rules say students without the listed qualifications (GATE / CSIR / CSIR-JRF / AICTE / NET) are not eligible, without clearly mapping each score to each course. Plan on needing one and confirm the exact requirement with the institute.
Is it for any course? No. The fellowship is exclusively for renewable-energy-related M.Tech, PhD and post-doctoral research at institutes allotted NREF slots.
Is 30 November the deadline? It is the date on the NSP listing's application window as of 25 October 2026. MNRE's rules document publishes no public application deadline, and selection happens inside allotted institutes, so treat 30 November as a portal-listed window, not a universal scheme deadline.
How many get it? Unclear from the official document itself: one sentence says 165 new fellowships every year, while its table totals 33 new slots a year (15 M.Tech, 16 JRF, 2 RA/PDF; 165 over five years). We are reporting the inconsistency rather than picking one.
