MusicBrainz Picard: free music tagger to organize your collection
Picard is a cross-platform music tagger powered by the MusicBrainz database. Its site says it is open source under GPL 2.0 or later. It can identify songs by audio fingerprint and rename your files. Here is what its pages say.
Quick facts
- What it does: fixes the tags (title, artist, album, cover art) of your music files and can rename and sort files into folders the way you want.
- Price: free. Its site says "Picard is licensed under GPL 2.0 or later". Downloads carry no price, including the Microsoft Store listing. No price appears, so no rupee figure.
- Platforms: Windows, macOS and Linux, per its downloads page.
- Best for: anyone with a messy music folder: unknown tracks, missing album names, inconsistent file names.

What it is
MusicBrainz Picard is the official tagger of the MetaBrainz Foundation. It matches your files against the community-maintained MusicBrainz database. Its site says AcoustID audio fingerprints let it identify tracks by the actual music, even when a file has no metadata at all. It can also look up entire CDs and fetch cover art.
Is it free?
Yes, per the project. The Open Source section of its home page says Picard is licensed under GPL 2.0 or later and developed on GitHub. The downloads page charges nothing, the Microsoft Store listing is labelled "Free download and install on Windows", and the foundation invites donations. Picard has no paid edition on the pages we read.
What the pages list
- Supports popular formats: MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WMA, WAV and more.
- Identifies tracks with AcoustID audio fingerprints, even with no existing tags.
- CD lookups and automatic cover art.
- A scripting language to control exactly how files are named and tagged, plus plugins.
- Current version 3.0.2, released 11 October 2026 per its What's New page. Windows (installer and portable), macOS 13 and newer (older Intel builds for macOS 10.12+ and 10.14+), Linux via Flatpak, Snap and distribution repositories.
Our advice
- Try it on a copy of a few albums first, not your whole library. This is our advice, not the project's.
- Check its suggestions before saving: an automatic match can occasionally pick the wrong release.
- Download from picard.musicbrainz.org or the official store links on its downloads page.
Privacy and data
- To identify your music, Picard sends lookups to online services (MusicBrainz and AcoustID), per its own feature descriptions. We found no separate privacy statement on the pages we read and make no further claim.
India
- No region limit appears on the pages we read. We did not test it from India.
