Knowt: free AI flashcard practice for students
Scoped recheck: 24 October 2026. Official source and policy review; no account, installation, application or payment test.
Knowt is a study service with flashcards and AI-powered revision tools. Its Learn Mode is free for unlimited rounds, per Knowt. Start with your own checked cards rather than assuming every AI feature is unlimited.
What is Knowt?
A flashcard is a small question-and-answer card: a term on one side and its meaning on the other. Knowt lets you make these cards, study existing sets and practise using several question formats. Its official Learn Mode page describes an AI algorithm that chooses how to test you on each card.
The 10 September official free-plan and summarizer help pages now specify 1 AI summary per month for free students. They also list 1 free full-length AP/SAT/ACT mock exam and 5 free practice-room sessions; do not assume these reset monthly, since only the summarizer allowance is explicitly monthly there. AI on teacher-shared class materials is separately described as free for students. Check Settings → Your Plan for the actual reset counter. This is a source claim, not a tested account entitlement.
Knowt also offers AI tools that make notes and flashcards from uploaded material. This guide focuses on the clearly verified free Learn Mode, not a promise of unlimited AI generation.
Why try it in Kerala or elsewhere in India?
For school, college or competitive-exam revision, you could make a small set from one chapter of your own textbook. For example, use a biology term as the question and a short definition from your class notes as the answer. This is a suggested use, not evidence that Knowt follows Kerala SCERT, CBSE, NEET or PSC syllabuses.
We rechecked the India App Store listing, not a device installation. Knowt says its app is on iOS and Android, and its study service also works on the web. We did not test an Android installation in India. Malayalam support and alignment with Indian exam marking schemes were not verified.
How to start, step by step
- Open knowt.com and select Get Started.
- Enter your name, email and birthday, choose Student and pick a username. Verify your email with the code Knowt sends you. Its guide also offers Google or Apple sign-in.
- Use the green + button to create a flashcard set. For your first attempt, write a few terms and definitions yourself from a textbook you trust.
- Check the cards for spelling, facts and missing context before practising.
- Open the set from Materials and select Learn.
- Choose your question types, round length and other options, then select Start. You can choose flashcards, multiple choice, written answers or true/false.
- If you have an exam date, add it in the options so Knowt can pace the rounds toward it.
- Review your wrong answers against your notes. On the mobile app, open the set in Library, select Study flashcard set, then Learn.
Cost and limits
| Free verdict | Knowt says Learn Mode is free for all flashcard sets, for unlimited rounds. No paid plan is needed for that feature. |
|---|---|
| AI generation | Current student help: 1 AI summary per month; Ultra removes that summarizer limit. Teacher-shared class AI is separately free for students. Other AI features can have their own limits. |
| Paid option | Rendered web student plans: US $149.99 billed upfront annually or $24.99 monthly. The annual tile also says $12.99/month, which does not exactly match the annual total; compare the actual billed total. India App Store has different purchases. Tax, currency and final checkout not tested. |
| India | The Indian App Store lists Knowt: AI Flashcards & Notes as free with in-app purchases. App listing verified, not hands-on installation. |
| Class sets | Teachers can lock Learn settings, so some options may be missing or greyed out. |
Use the grading carefully
Smart grading can ignore small differences such as typos, capitalisation or missing articles. You can turn it off for exact-match grading. Written answers can also be set to require retyping a correction. Knowt lets you override a wrong mark if the meaning was the same.
Age, uploads and privacy
The terms require users to be at least 13, and verifiable parent/guardian consent before anyone under 18 uses AI functionality. The App Store’s 4+ content rating is not permission for a child to create an account or use AI without that consent. Privacy text discusses younger children, but do not use that as a bypass of the terms.
The terms give Knowt a broad perpetual, irrevocable and sublicensable licence to submitted content, including use to train/develop/improve its AI models, and say submissions must not contain confidential/proprietary material. The privacy policy says student flashcards and notes are shared with other users and describes analytics, advertising identifiers and third-party tracking. Do not assume a personal set or uploaded class file is confidential. Use your own non-sensitive material with permission, not identifiable student records, restricted textbooks, exam leaks or client work.
The privacy policy separately says Google API user data is not sold, used for advertising or generalized-model training; Drive access is limited to the files selected in its picker. That narrower Google-data commitment is not a blanket promise covering every other upload. Browser GPC is not implemented according to the policy; deletion and retention exceptions still apply. No upload, visibility, consent or deletion controls were tested.
Trials and refund wording disagree
The rendered annual plan offers a 3-day trial; paid subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled under their terms. The plans FAQ says a refund request within 24 hours, less about 3.5% fees, but the terms say full refund less fees within 48 hours and 50% up to 72 hours. Do not rely on the longer window. Confirm the policy for your purchase before paying. Plans say redeemed promotional merchandise coins remove refund eligibility, and iOS/Android purchases use their respective store refund routes. Cancellation stops renewal; it does not promise an immediate refund.
These are study aids, not an official examiner. Check important answers against your teacher or textbook. A well-formatted AI card can still contain an error. Avoid uploading private student records, identity documents or notes you do not have permission to share.
Checked official Learn Mode, getting-started and Learn instructions plus the India App Store listing on 7 October 2026. Confirmed AI-powered question selection, unlimited free Learn rounds, setup steps and app listing. Current free-plan, usage, summarizer help, rendered web prices, terms and privacy additionally reviewed on 24 October 2026. Not tested: learning outcomes, answer accuracy, Malayalam quality, India installation, account quotas, age-consent flow, uploads, payment, refund or deletion.
