Kerala AEDP apprenticeship: reported Rs 10,900 monthly stipend, official rollout notice not yet verified
Scoped recheck 24 October 2026: national UGC/PIB framework, NATS and current press reports compared, with targeted official Kerala PRD/Higher Education searches. No Kerala rollout order, institution list, application window or scheme-specific route verified. Press stipend discrepancy retained; general NATS registration is not a verified AEDP application. No registration or application tested.
News reports on 22 October 2026 said Keralam will implement the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) of the Board of Apprenticeship Training (BOAT), under the Union Ministry of Education, from the current academic year. PTI and The Hindu, quoting an official statement, reported that Higher Education Minister Roji M John announced six months of practical industry training alongside studies for final-semester arts, science and commerce undergraduates, with a reported monthly stipend of Rs 10,900 for degree students and Rs 9,600 for diploma students. AiCoN has not independently verified an official Kerala rollout notice, and the application window and route are not yet verified.
What was reported
The following details are as reported on 22 October 2026 by PTI (carried by News18) and The Hindu, both quoting an official statement. At the time we checked (night of 22 October 2026) the full official release text was not yet published on the Kerala Information and Public Relations Department website, so treat these as press-reported details, not portal-confirmed rules.
- The state government has decided to implement AEDP in higher education institutions in Keralam from the present academic year.
- The programme is reported to be the Board of Apprenticeship Training (BOAT) scheme under the Union Ministry of Education.
- Eligible students are reported to be final-semester undergraduates in arts, science and commerce.
- Training is reported as six months of practical industrial (on-the-job) training taken alongside studies.
- Reported monthly stipend during training: Rs 10,900 for degree students and Rs 9,600 for diploma students.
- The minister reportedly said the initiative aims to improve students' employment prospects at the college level itself. That is a stated aim, not a job guarantee.
What AEDP is (verified from official documents)
AEDP is a central framework that lets a student pursue apprenticeship training as an integrated part of a degree programme. The UGC launched its "Guidelines for Higher Educational Institutions to offer Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme" in 2025, under the National Education Policy 2020, to improve the employability of general-stream students. The framework covers all disciplines recognised under the UGC Act, and training is implemented with higher educational institutions in partnership with the regional Boards of Apprenticeship Training (BOAT) and Boards of Practical Training (BOPT). Keralam falls under BOAT Southern Region, Chennai. Under the guidelines, a degree apprenticeship runs on a tripartite agreement between the institution, the industry or establishment, and the student.
Apprenticeship training in India is governed by the Apprentices Act, 1961. The Department of Higher Education handles apprenticeship programmes for general-stream graduates such as BA, BCom and BSc, as confirmed in Parliament in July 2025.
The national UGC framework does not itself confirm these Kerala stipend figures or a state application window. It permits an institution to embed apprenticeship under an agreement and requires at least one whole semester at a stretch; it is not a universal six-month cash benefit for every undergraduate. Institutional curriculum, industry placement and contract conditions still matter.
What is not yet verified
- No official Kerala rollout notice has been independently located: the application window, portal and route are not yet verified.
- The list of participating institutions and industries is not published in any source we could verify.
- Detailed eligibility conditions beyond the reported "final-semester arts, science and commerce students" are not published in any source we could verify.
The University of Kerala has separately said it is preparing six-month paid apprenticeships for its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme students under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) with BOAT Southern Region, but that plan still needs its Academic Council's approval, according to a Careers360 report citing the university's official social media. That report quotes Rs 12,300 for bachelor's/BTech, Rs 10,900 for diploma and Rs 9,600 for vocational-degree trainees, unlike the state announcement reports above. These press reports concern different descriptions and are not reconciled by a Kerala implementation order we could verify. Wait for your institution's formal notice rather than choosing the higher figure.
What students can do now
- Watch your university and college notice boards and official websites for any AEDP rollout notice for your institution.
- Students interested in apprenticeships in general can read the central NATS 2.0 portal, nats.education.gov.in. This is not a verified application link for the Kerala AEDP announcement. Follow your institution's formal notice before creating or changing a registration; general NATS eligibility and an institution's embedded-degree route are not interchangeable.
- Do not pay anyone who offers to "register" you for this scheme. No fee or paid registration has been announced in the reports, and no application channel has been verified.
Video guides
The 24 October scoped recheck did not verify an official English or Malayalam application explainer for the Kerala rollout. A general apprenticeship video is not proof that this specific application route is open.
