What it is
Kapwing is an online video editor that runs in the browser. It has an AI auto-subtitle tool: upload a video, and it writes the subtitles for you, then you can edit the text and translate it. Kapwing says it supports 155 language variants for automatic captions. Its list includes Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi.
Is it free
Partly. Kapwing's pricing page shows a Free plan with 10 credits and auto-subtitling for up to 10 minutes of video. Free exports carry a Kapwing watermark and are limited to 4 minutes. The actual pricing toggle shows Pro US$16 per member per month equivalent with Annual selected and US$24 with Monthly selected. Confirm the full annual charge, workspace seats, taxes and local checkout price before paying; no Indian checkout or INR conversion was verified. Kapwing's credits help page says the Free plan gets 10 credits for the lifetime of the account, not each month. Subtitle transcription costs 1 credit per minute; subtitle translation costs 2 credits per minute. Other AI tools share this allowance. Each tool use costs at least one credit even for input shorter than a minute, so 10 credits do not guarantee ten separate one-minute jobs plus translations. No paid-plan free trial is offered on the pricing FAQ.
How to try it
- Open kapwing.com and sign up free.
- Upload a short video and choose Auto subtitles.
- Pick the spoken language, then fix any wrong words in the text.
- Export. On the free plan the video will carry a watermark.
Limits to know
- The free allowance is small. Long videos need a paid plan.
- Exports on the free plan have a watermark and a 4 minute length limit.
- Subtitles can have mistakes, especially with accents, noise and mixed languages. Read them before you post.
- Your video is uploaded to Kapwing, not processed entirely on your device. The privacy policy describes US-based service, service providers and international data handling. Do not upload confidential footage, children's records or client files without the needed rights and consent.
- Project and workspace deletion remove public viewing immediately; the policy says their projects are removed from servers within seven days. Account deletion is a separate Account Settings action. These are policy statements, not deletion tests or a verified backup-erasure guarantee. Export originals and subtitle files you need before deleting.
- Do not treat every AI feature as ordinary subtitles: voice cloning sends recordings to a third-party service and the policy allows recorded data for research/development and internal product improvement. YouTube-connected features can request view/manage access; revoke that separately in Google security settings when no longer needed.
- We found no official page on availability in India, and no restriction either. The language list is the only India signal.

Can I get subtitles without paying?
For a short video, yes. Kapwing says free accounts can auto-subtitle up to 10 minutes, with a watermark on exports.
Before you export
Check names, dates, numbers and mixed Malayalam-English speech line by line. Preview the timing and keep text clear of faces and on-screen controls. A 10-minute subtitle allowance does not mean a 10-minute free export: the free export limit is 4 minutes, at 720p with a watermark.
