What it is
Habitica is a habit and to-do app that turns your tasks into a game. Its website calls it "a free habit-building and productivity app that treats your real life like a game". You add Habits, Dailies and To Dos, tick them off, and your avatar earns Gold and experience, and loses health when you skip Dailies. It is not an AI tool.
Is it free?
Yes, there is a free version. The Habitica homepage and its Google Play listing both say "free". Habitica's terms say you may "choose our free Service or paid Service (Premium)". The paid side is optional: the FAQ says Gems are an in-app paid currency for items like equipment and avatar looks, and subscribers get extras such as a monthly gear set. Group Plans are a paid feature, while Challenges are free to everyone. We could not see current prices, so we quote no price or INR amount.
What you get, per Habitica
- Three task types: Habits (positive, negative or both), Dailies on a schedule, and one-off To Dos.
- Rewards and penalties: tasks change colour from yellow towards blue (better) or red (worse). Missing a Daily costs HP. A "Pause Damage" button in Settings prevents damage from your own missed Dailies, for example on holiday. In a Quest, your pending progress is paused but you can still take damage from Party members' missed Dailies.
- Party and quests: fight monsters with friends. Mobile apps for Android and iOS, and a web version.
- Data export: task data can be exported from the Site Data tab in Settings on the website.
How to start
- Open habitica.com, or find "Habitica: Gamify Your Tasks" by HabitRPG, Inc. on Google Play.
- Make an account (the privacy policy mentions email sign-up and log in with Google or Apple).
- Add a few tasks. Our advice: start with two or three, not twenty.
What to watch out for
- Age: Habitica's privacy policy says the service is for users 18 or older. The India-setting Google Play listing shows a lower content rating (3+), which is not the service's minimum account age. We go by Habitica's own policy.
- Ads: the Google Play listing says "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases". The homepage does not mention ads. We did not see which screens show them.
- Real-life penalties are game penalties only. The avatar loses HP; nothing else happens. Some people find that motivating, some find it stressful. That is our view.
- We did not install or test it.
Privacy and data
- The privacy policy says it may collect contact details, account information, and content you add such as task lists. Payments go through Apple, Google, PayPal or Stripe.
- It says it uses analytics and advertising cookies on the website, and that some personal information may be "sold" or shared for targeted advertising, with an opt-out section. The Google Play description says it never sells personal data, while the website policy describes sale/share for targeted advertising under applicable privacy-law definitions. Do not treat the store wording as a blanket no-sharing guarantee. Read the policy before you sign up.
- The privacy policy says you can delete or reset your account from Settings. The Google Play data safety section says data may be shared with third parties and you can request deletion. Tasks can hold personal details, so our advice: keep task names general.
India
- The Google Play page opened with India store settings (en_IN, gl=IN) and showed the app. Store ratings and review counts change and are not an install or suitability guarantee. We did not install it from India and established no current INR price for paid items.

Scoped recheck 24 October 2026: official homepage, FAQ, terms, privacy policy and India-setting Google Play listing rechecked. Free core service, optional paid Gems/subscription and paid Group Plans remain supported; no current exact paid price or INR amount established. Corrected Pause Damage: it stops own missed-Daily damage, but party members can still damage you in a quest. Policy remains 18+ despite lower app-store content rating. Removed volatile store rating/review counts. Added conflict between the store description saying no personal-data sale and the policy describing sale/share for targeted advertising. Existing official publisher media retained. No install, account, export or purchase test.
