What it is
Google is offering one year of Google AI Plus, free, to eligible college students in India. Google's India blog says AI Plus includes access to Gemini Omni, 2x higher usage limits in Gemini and 400 GB of storage. The same post announces a student hub in Gemini with study notebooks, and new student tools in Google Search.
Is it free
Yes for the first year, but it is not free forever and it needs a payment method. Google's terms on the post say a valid form of payment is required at sign-up, and unless you cancel earlier, Google AI Plus will automatically charge about ₹483 a month as a currency estimate ($4.99/month or local-currency equivalent, at ₹96.78 per dollar from Mataf checked 12 October 2026) after the free year ends. Google's help page says you will be notified ahead of the change. You can cancel anytime. This conversion is not a verified Indian checkout price; taxes, bank fees and the actual local plan price may differ. Check the final price, trial end date and cancellation route in your account before activating. The free year is a payment-required trial, not a permanently free plan.
Who qualifies
Google's help page says you must be a student at a higher education institution, verify your student status through SheerID with a valid school email address, and have a personal Google Account with a qualifying form of payment. It says family group members and people with memberships through third-party partners, Pixel Pass or Google Fi are not eligible as described in its exclusions. Do not leave a family group or cancel an existing plan just to test eligibility: doing so can remove benefits and create costs. We could not tell from the pages we read whether every Indian college qualifies, so do not assume every institution qualifies. SheerID's consumer-protection page says student verification in India has a minimum age of 18. The exact offer terms and verification screen determine eligibility.
Deadline
Google's India post says to redeem by 31 December 2026. This is a claim deadline, not the day every free year ends. Check the subscription start and trial end dates displayed for your account.
How to claim it
- On your device, go to one.google.com/ai-student.
- Select the free-year Google AI Plus student offer, not the separate paid AI Pro/YouTube bundle. Check the personal Google account you are using.
- Verify through the official SheerID flow when asked. Read its data notice and use only the required school details or documents. Do not upload student records to random offer sites or send them to AiCoN.
- Read the trial end date, local renewal price and cancellation terms, then complete the subscription flow with a qualifying payment method if acceptable. Set your own reminder before paid renewal; we have not set a reminder for readers.
Limits and privacy to know
- Set a reminder before the year ends if you do not want the paid plan to start.
- The post also lists a Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle for up to 70% off, which needs SheerID verification and can renew at the standard price. This article is about the free AI Plus year only.
- Google's help page says recurring add-ons such as extra storage are unavailable with a student offer.
- Google's Gemini Privacy Hub says adult Keep Activity is on by default and activity may be used to improve services, including AI model training, with human reviewers. Check Activity and connected-app settings before use. Do not enter confidential work, identity records or sensitive student data.
- With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train models unless you submit feedback; temporary chats also avoid model-training use. They can still be stored for up to 72 hours and reviewed for safety. Reviewed chats may be kept separately for up to 3 years. Settings do not control every anonymized use or data held in other Google apps.
- SheerID collects verification data. Its developer privacy guide says uploaded documents default to 7 days after review, but retention can be configured by the program; this is not a confirmed Google-program deletion promise. Review the actual notice before submitting and use its support route for privacy requests.
- We did not log in, verify student status, upload documents, add payment details, activate or cancel a subscription, or test Gemini features.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Plus free for students in India?
Yes, for one year for eligible college students who verify through SheerID and add a payment method. It then charges a paid monthly price unless cancelled (announcement: $4.99 or local equivalent; about ₹483 by conversion, not a verified India quote). Redeem by 31 December 2026.
Is this the same as the old AI Pro student offer?
No. This article covers the current India AI Plus free-year announcement. Google's help page also describes different offers, including a US AI Pro trial and a paid AI Pro/YouTube student bundle. Do not mix their country rules, benefits or renewal prices.
What happens to an existing trial or paid plan?
Google says signing up for a student offer while on another extended trial revokes the current offer and switches it. Paid-plan changes can occur immediately or at the end of the billing cycle, depending on the plan. Check your account before switching. Higher limits are not unlimited access; verify AI answers and citations for coursework.
