What it is
GCompris is a free collection of educational games and activities for children aged 2 to 10. Its site calls it "a high quality educational software suite" with "more than 100 activities" on the home page and "more than 150" on its schools page. Activities cover learning to use a keyboard and mouse, letters and reading, arithmetic, science such as the water cycle, geography, music, and games like chess and memory. It is made by the KDE community. It is not an AI tool. We included it as a free educational goodie from an official source.
Is it free?
Yes. GCompris's news page says that since 14 February 2020 the full version is "available at no cost for every supported platform", with no activation code, including the Play Store and Microsoft Store versions. Its schools page says it is free software under the GNU General Public License. The Windows and Android download pages we read show no price.
What children can do
- Computer basics: keyboard, mouse and touchscreen practice.
- Reading and typing, from letters to words.
- Maths: numbers, addition, tables, measures and puzzles.
- Science and geography, for example the water cycle and countries and regions.
- Colours, shapes, telling the time, music and Braille.
- Board games such as chess for two players, memory and tic-tac-toe.
- Teachers can pick the level of difficulty for each child, per the schools page.
How to get it
- Windows: Windows Store or installer. The download page says Windows 10 or 11 for the current version, 26.2.
- Android: Play Store, F-Droid or a direct APK. The page says Android 4.1 to 8.0 devices need the older version 4.3.1.
- Linux: standalone installer, and packages in many distributions.
- Mac: the page says the latest version is not available on macOS. Only the older version 4.3 is offered.
- We saw no iPhone or iPad version on the download page.
What to watch out for
- Voices, images and background music are separate downloads. The FAQ says the app can download these automatically, and you can turn that off in settings.
- It is made for ages 2 to 10. Older children may find it too easy.
- Check the language you want. We did not verify which Indian languages are fully supported. A past news item mentions Malayalam among supported languages, but this was not checked for the current version.
Privacy and data
- GCompris's mobile privacy policy says the app "does not request and does not record any user provided information" and "does not collect information automatically".
- Its schools page says GCompris does not need an internet connection and does not collect any data.
- The downloads of extra assets above are the one time it connects, per its FAQ.
India
- GCompris's schools page lists Kerala among the places where it says GCompris is "officially recommended for teachers". This is GCompris's own claim. We did not check it with Kerala authorities.
- We did not test the downloads from India.

Scoped recheck 23 October 2026: 26.2 is still the current version for Windows (Windows 10 or 11); Android 4.1 to 8.0 devices still need the older 4.3.1; macOS still offers only 4.3; the home page still says "more than 100 activities" and the schools page "more than 150"; the 14 February 2020 no-cost announcement and the GPL statement stand.
