What it is
foobar2000 is a music player. Its website calls it "an advanced freeware audio player". It plays all mainstream audio formats out of the box, supports gapless playback, can rip audio CDs and convert between formats, and can be customised with add-on components. It is not an AI tool.
Is it free?
Yes, per the site: "freeware". The foobar2000 site also says "No strings attached, no telemetry, no data collection." Freeware is not the same as open source. The license pages say it is copyrighted, and that only unmodified installers may be redistributed. We saw no price on the pages we read. We did not check the iPhone App Store listing for a price.
What it does, per foobar2000
- Formats and playback: mainstream audio formats, gapless playback, ReplayGain.
- Library tools: tagging, CD ripping, and converting between audio formats. A separate free Encoder Pack is listed for the converter.
- Streaming and radio: stream music on your local network, and internet radio including Radio Browser.
- Customisable: keyboard shortcuts, layout (on Windows and macOS), and add-on components made by other developers.
- Platforms and requirements: Windows 7 or newer, macOS 11 or newer, Android 7.0 or newer, iOS and iPadOS 12.1 or newer. Linux is covered only through Wine on the Windows version, per the site.
How to get it
- Open foobar2000.org and choose your system from the menu: Windows, macOS, Android or iOS.
- The Windows page lists 2.26.1 as the latest stable version and 2.26.2 preview 2026-10-22 (rechecked 22 October 2026). The site's news says 2.26 was released on 1 October 2026 for Windows and macOS. The mobile pages list 2.26.
- Our advice: download only from foobar2000.org or the app store, since only unmodified installers are allowed to be redistributed.
What to watch out for
- Not a one-click design. The site calls its layout customisable; add-ons are by third parties. We did not test it, so we cannot say how easy it is for a new user.
- The website shows an advertisement (we saw one for a CD ripper on the front page). That is the website, not necessarily the player. The Google Play listing text we read did not show an ads label, and we did not install it.
- Add-on components come from other developers. Our advice: use components listed on the official components page.
Privacy and data
- The site says "no telemetry, no data collection". The Google Play data safety section for the app, by Illustrate Ltd, says "No data collected". Both are the developer's statements. We did not test them.
India
- The Google Play page opened with the India store setting (en_IN) and showed the app with a 3.8 rating from 16.5K reviews and "10L+" downloads. We saw no region limit and no INR price. We did not install it.
