What it is
The Epic Games Store is a PC and Mac game shop. This post is about one thing in it: the free game offer. Epic says it "gives you a free game every week", and the free games page says "Get a new free game every Thursday on Mobile and PC! App available globally on Android, and on iPhone and iPad in the EU." It is not an AI tool, and the shop also sells paid games (its FAQ mentions non-free games).
Is it free?
The weekly game is free, per Epic. Epic's store FAQ says: "Epic will be offering a new free game available each week." One version of the FAQ adds that a claimed free game is "yours to keep - even after the game is no longer available to new customers for free". Another version says that claiming "you've purchased a digital license" for it. We read both as the same thing: the game stays in your library after you claim it. Free promotions last a limited time, and Epic's help page says that if you miss the window, you must wait for future offers. Epic says some publishers also run free trial periods for paid games, and those end. The page also lists free-to-play games, which have their own in-game purchases, and we did not check those. We saw no price for claiming the weekly game.
How it works, per Epic
- Open the free games page. It shows what is on offer now. The offer changes weekly, so we do not name a game here.
- Claim the game before the date shown on that page.
- The games then show in your Epic account library. Epic's FAQ tells people who cannot see a claimed game to check whether they have more than one account.
We did not go through the claim steps ourselves. We do not know whether a payment method is asked for.
What to watch out for
- Check each game's page. Epic says the "Specifications" section of each product page shows platform support. The store FAQ says it supports PC and Mac. Free games vary widely in size and system needs.
- Account and age: an Epic account is used. For children, Epic's parental consent page says a child's account is a "Cabined Account", with limits such as no purchases with money, no chat, and some downloads blocked, until a parent consents. Epic's privacy policy says it may ask for date of birth.
- Do not rush. Our advice: check that a game suits you before you install a very large file.
- We did not test the store or any free game.
Privacy and data
- Epic's privacy policy says that when you create an account it may collect your name, display name, password, country and email address. For purchases it may collect payment details. It says it may collect your date of birth, and a parent's email if you say you are a child.
- We did not read the whole policy. Read it before signing up.
India
- Epic's FAQ says the store is available in most countries, except where prohibited by US law, and lists INR among the currencies it accepts. It also says the mobile free games app is "available globally on Android". We did not test claiming a game from India, and no INR price for claiming appears.
