What it is
Elements of AI is a series of free online courses made by MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki. The site says the goal is to help as broad a group of people as possible learn what AI is, what it can and cannot do, and how to start building AI methods. There are two courses. Introduction to AI is for anyone and needs no complicated math or programming. Building AI covers the algorithms behind AI methods, and the site recommends some basic Python.
Is it free
Yes. The site calls both courses free and says all the course content and exercises are free of charge. The certificate for Introduction to AI is also free, according to the course FAQ. For Building AI, the FAQ says a shareable certificate costs 50 euros, including VAT where it applies, which is about ₹5,400 using an illustrative ₹108 per euro conversion, not a verified Indian checkout quote or guaranteed current exchange rate. The rupee figure is approximate; card conversion, taxes and bank fees may change the final total. The FAQ recommends buying this optional certificate only after passing. We did not inspect checkout or confirm its refund terms, so check the final price and purchase conditions before paying. You only need the certificate if you want to show your skills to others. The Introduction certificate is digital only, in the language you took the course in.
Is it available in India
It is an online course and the site says students from more than 170 countries have taken it. It does not name India on the pages we read, so we call India availability unconfirmed. Try the sign-up page to check.
Completion and certificates
Introduction to AI requires at least 90% of exercises completed and 50% correctness. Peer-reviewed exercises count as complete only after the required reviews and score. Building AI requires at least 19 of 21 exercises and 50% correctness; any difficulty level counts, while intermediate/advanced work requires programming. These are course-completion certificates, not a degree or a job guarantee.
After Introduction answers are processed, find the free digital certificate at the top of My profile. Building AI needs both a successful pass and the optional certificate purchase. Check your name in your profile before clicking Download certificate. Peer or manual review can delay either result.
Privacy before signing up
The June 2025 policy names MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki as controllers. It may collect name, email, country, address/postcode and relevant identification details, plus exercises, progress and order data. Your account stays active after completion to keep progress and certificates available. Do not put private work or personal secrets in answers that other students review.
Marketing and research processing are described as consent-based. With marketing consent, email addresses may be shared with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google marketing platforms; withdraw that consent in your profile. The policy also names Mailchimp transfers to the US, Crisp for support, Adyen for certificate payments and optional Circle communities. The policy's Europe-only wording concerns Crisp, not every service.
Account deletion also erases course progress and certification information. The policy describes a TMC account-removal request, emailed completion steps and then a data-removal request to MinnaLearn. Check the current instructions and save your certificate first if you want to keep it. Access, correction and deletion questions can go to the policy's listed privacy contacts.
How to try it
- Open the official Introduction to AI course. Start here if you are new; Building AI is a separate follow-up course.
- Create a free account and work at your own pace.
- Do the exercises. Some are peer reviewed, so you review other students' answers too.
Limits to know
- The time FAQ estimates 4-8 hours per part for Introduction to AI. Its roughly 50-hour estimate is for Building AI and depends on the difficulty level and optional work. It suggests trying to finish in six weeks, but both are self-paced.
- For a certificate you must give at least 3 peer reviews on each peer-evaluated exercise. Your answers need at least two reviews from other students with a high-enough score, so a certificate can take time. The FAQ advises against promising a certificate to anyone by a fixed deadline.
- The FAQ says the Introduction to AI certificate is free and the Building AI certificate is paid.
- We did not create an account, take the course, test India signup, purchase a certificate or inspect paid checkout. No verified India-specific restriction was found; global open-course claims do not prove an individual signup will work.
