Character.AI says messaging is free and unlimited on every plan, with ads on free. Chat is for verified adults only. Here is what to know before you start.

What it is

Character.AI is an app and website where you chat with AI characters. Character.AI describes itself as interactive entertainment: you can role-play stories, brainstorm, or just talk with characters made by the company or by other users. The characters are AI, not real people.

Is it free?

Yes, there is a free plan. Character.AI's help centre says messaging is free and unlimited for all users, and its lite plan page says "Unlimited messaging stays on every plan, including free". What the free plan comes with, per Character.AI's plan table: full ads, "slow mode", basic memory (15 pins), limited feature limits, and no premium chat styles. The paid tiers are (c.ai) lite and (c.ai+). Character.AI's subscribe page shows the c.ai+ annual price as $94.99 a year in USD, down from $119.88. Indian checkout, taxes and INR price were not verified. The official lite help page lists US prices of $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, says pricing varies by country and subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. India lite pricing is unconfirmed; check the app before subscribing. Google Play lists the Android app as "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases".

Who can chat: 18 and over

Character.AI says all users must complete an age check. Users verified as 18 or older get full chat with characters.
Eligible users verified as under 18 are put in a reading mode. The privacy policy says under-13s cannot use the service, or under-16s in the EEA or UK. Reading mode is not permission for younger children to sign up. Chat with characters is not available there, per Character.AI.
The age check is run by a third party, Persona, per Character.AI. The help page says the app prompts you, or you can start it under Settings, Advanced, Verify Age.

What you can do on the free plan

Chat with characters on the web or in the app.
Use the basic chat styles and basic memory.
Not on free, per the plan table: premium chat styles, chat customization, and ad-free use.

India

Google Play India shows the Character.AI app for download. The listing's content rating is Teen with "Diverse content: Discretion advised". That is a store content rating, not permission for minors to chat; the verified-18+ rule applies. Character.AI's own pages we read do not list countries.

Privacy: read before you share

Character.AI's privacy policy says it collects what you submit, including chat messages, and uses information to improve its services, "including to train our artificial intelligence/machine learning models".
The policy says it may share personal information with advertising and analytics providers, and lists choices such as opting out of targeted advertising and asking for deletion. We did not find a setting that stops chats being used for training, so we are not saying there is one.
AiCoN advice: do not share real names, addresses, ID numbers, health or money details in a roleplay chat. Treat it as entertainment, not as advice or a replacement for talking to a real person you trust.

Seven official sources rechecked on 13 October 2026. The lite page now supplies US-only monthly and weekly prices; India pricing is unconfirmed. The c.ai+ FAQ updated 14 September repeats free unlimited messaging but contains older waiting-room wording. The 22 September lite page repeats unlimited messaging, while chat style names differ from the current subscribe page, so no style names are recommended here. Verified-18+ chat, reading mode and privacy warnings remain. No installation, age check, account, chat, subscription or opt-out test performed.
